THE HAND SHAKE
I sticks me hand out, friendly like, and flashes him me smile
'Cause trustin' in ya fellow man, that is me current style
'You look to be honest enough,
a firm handshake will do,
to seal the deal, now cool ya heel
and join me in a brew.
Sit down and stay a while.'
'My pocket's deep, me arms are short, but let me buy a round
to celebrate the deal we made - to toast a friend I found.'
'Two middies of your finest ale,
only the best will do.
Drink your fill and quench ya thirst.
My friend, pull up a pew.
You've a tale to tell, I'm bound.
'You'll lay some money on the bar? We'll drink until its spent?
You really are too generous - a most obliging gent.'
'Keep pouring ales, my fine bar keep,
We've drinking here to do..
If you insist, I shan't resist,
there's not a lot like you.
You are most benevolent.'
'Let's sit at the piano, and we'll fill the inn with song
High spirited and bawdy like, the rest can sing along'
'The ladies will come dancing
we'll turn on quite a do.'
'Drink up, drink up, refill your cup
The witching hour is due
And the night is not that long.'
'Good morning, my good fellow, did we have too much to drink?
Me tongues a little furry, and it hurts me head to think.'
'You look forlorn - your money's gone?
Well, what's a man to do?
Let me buy you breckie pie,
I still have a 'bob' or two.'
I just smiles and gives a wink.
'How dare you be accusing me of stealing all your dough!
I'm honest as the day is long. I will have you know.'
'I'll not be calling you my friend,
a fine 'How do you do'.
I'll make a stand, not shake the hand
Of one the likes of you.
Be off with you! Now go!'

Re: THE HAND SHAKE
Interesting rhyme scheme, Allan - a little different from the usual. Works well.

Re: THE HAND SHAKE
It was once, proudly, a part of our culture. No more I'm afraid. Enjoyed the poem Allan.
