HUMPTY DOO
HUMPTY DOO
Me and Doris, we've been fightin'
pretty much all day and night.
Seems we can't agree on nuthin',
thinks she's always in the right.
So I packed a swag, the cattle dog
and filled an esky too,
and I'm heading for the top end,
up to Humpty-bloody-Doo
I reckon that it's far enough,
though barely, I might add,
so I can't hear her moanin',
and in case her dear old dad
has any mind to track me down,
as fathers sometimes do,
he'd best be made of sterling stuff
to come to Humpty Doo.
First port of call when I arrive -
the Humpty Doo Hotel,
to wet the flamin' whistle,
meet some locals there as well.
I hope they speak the lingo,
'cause I've got some fat to chew,
and I'll prob'ly talk the ears off
all the folks at Humpty Doo.
'I'm lookin' for some lodgin's'
is what I'm gonna say.
Yep, I'm looking for some digs
that's for me dog and I to stay'.
Might dig me up a veggie patch
and raise a chook or two.
Yep, I'm looking, folks, to settle down
right here in Humpty Doo.
Just then me mobile phone goes off -
It's Doris on the line.
'I've just arrived in Humpty Doo
you stupid man of mine.
You left 'location setting ON'
your bloody mobile phone.
Been tracking down your sorry arse
The moment you left home.
It looks like I am stuck with her,
can't hardly send her back.
She's chased me half way cross the world,
way off the beaten track.
I should have kept on going till
I got to Timbuktu.
But for now it's me and Doris,
and a dog in Humpty Doo.

This is great Allan! A really enjoyable yarn, especially since I well remember Humpty Doo from when I lived in the NT and always thought how well the name would lend itself to a fun poem.

Thanks Catherine.
I thought the very same. We have some delicious town names in this wide brown land.
So glad you enjoyed the yarn.

Very funny and much enjoyed Allan. A couple of typos. You don't need an apostrophe on fathers and ..

Do you mean "all" ?

The purpose in life is to have fun.

Good one mate, could just hear it twanged out in a song.
Spent some good times at Humpty Doo myself, including (funnily enough) the pub. I vaguely recall bourbon and oyster shooters
Yeah the dog might fit in, dunno about Doris? Maybe a sequel could be in order after a session at the bar
Cheers, Marty

Re: HUMPTY DOO
Great fun - the name Humpty Doo always makes people grin - its a bit of fair dinkum Australiana on everyones mud map I suspect. Good to see the iconic blue dog in there along with a lot of other things that could only belong to the land down under
