REQUIEM … Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet.
Fields of red poppies lie
beneath gunmetal clouds.
The happy dead are here interred
the silent roar of cannons heard
in speechless awe – not like before.
The night blue space above
glitters with many stars
The soldiers dog star Sirius
blazes – its beauty glorious
in heavens field it shines and glows.
***
Hills clothed with beauty rise
as deep dawn pinks the sky
A fluttering flag on halyard snaps
and soft a lingered note from Taps
drifts on the breeze, echoes, echoes.
White crosses stand erect
serial numbers displayed
along with name and rank and date
that each man here met with his fate.
A peaceful place for folks to grieve.
This spot is marked for life.
And do you my love hear the sound
of magpies singing sweet
an aria till next we meet
once more, somewhere on hallowed ground.

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
