The Earth does not belong to us.
At best it’s just on loan.
But we plunder and we modify
this planet we don’t own.
In the name of innovation
we accelerate earth’s pain.
Creating situations
we try to solve in vain.
Each generation gets its turn
for thirty years or more,
to do it better - or maybe not,
than those who came before.
We create climatic models.
We confer about the weather.
Our world is heating up,
but are we facing it together?
No! We ridicule. We argue
about scientific thought.
If it doesn’t serve our purpose,
how easily we’re bought!
We’ve economic strategies
and global participations,
to make the world a better place
for the affluential nations.
Conflict! No it's not world war.
Yet its tentacles stretch wide.
Affecting peoples worlds away
with no place left to hide.
How many slips twixt the cup and the lip
will we need to imagine the end.
How many ill informed arguments
will champions of ‘do nothing’ defend.
Our natural world is under threat,
wherever your travels go.
Marina here, resort there,
forests a penny a throw.
We’ll wake up one bewildered day.
But will it be too late
to find that there is finally
agreement about our fate.
The Earth does not belong to us.
At best it’s just on loan,
so why not plunder? Why not modify?
after all,
It’s not something we own.

Re: When Will We Wake Up
I have often witnessed folk who purchase an item and open the packaging and find a plastic bag with a little booklet on top but in their wisdom throw it to the side and began to apply their own wisdom.
Some finally resort to opening the booklet and benefit from the makers wisdom to explain how it works.
Others go on to be frustrated and often try modifying it to suit themselves and reap what they sow.
Interesting antics.
Enjoyed the read mate.
Merv.

True words indeed, Wazza!
There is a proverb that says, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children."
Food for thought.
Cheers

Re: When Will We Wake Up
I doubt there is any creature on earth that causes as much pain, grief and ecological damage as humans do and yet we like to think of ourselves as being the ones with 'higher intelligence'. Often our actions belie that assumption. A good write Wazza.

Thanks Shelley and Maureen. If there's an answer it's constrained by greed and conflict and greed and power worship and greed and ignorance
and greed and ... ... ...
