Re: OUR FLAG
Yes Dave that is a common misconception that all you blokes seem to have, that sheep are stupid - why do you think that???? Never got the analogy myself, and never thought any of ours were stupid in fact they were darn smart IMO.
They learnt really quickly to come to the sound of the car horn beeping to eat the corn trails re ran out, sometimes coming in from other paddocks as we only fed in one. Ditto to following the car up the road to feed on the roadside grass. This learnt behaviour made mustering them a lot easier as well or moving them from paddock to paddock..the dogs only had to round up the stragglers and just keep the mob moving along. How come some of the rogue ones learnt to lie down and hide behind a fallen tree when you were mustering until you had passed and then jump up and run off in the opposite direction??? Had a few of them .
Admittedly they did have trouble differentiating between the white dog and the black sheep..thinking that Midnight the lamb was the dog and Anna the dog was the lamb but that was a colour issue..once Anna got a bit bigger and could bark loudly they worked that one out. That used to make mustering interesting.
We called ours woolies - suppose it was just local terminology. There were big woolly bas***ds, and those mongrel Damara and Dorper bas***ds. My little Midnight was often referred to as a Black bas***d and would have been killed had I not taken her...no 'self respecting' fine wool grower wants black or coloured wool any where near their sheds.
Nothing stupid about sheep...lot smarter than most of the ferals I see around IMO.
Cheers

Re: OUR FLAG
....I don't think they are stupid...I know they are! any animal that will die of thirst on one side of the paddock when there is a perfectly good trough full of water on the other side can't be all that smart, and I have seen that happen. Cattle will go and look for water but you have to show sheep where it is or they will perish.
