Homework W/E Nov. 14: The War of Words

Post by David Campbell » Fri Nov 04, 2016 8:40 am

Only one prompt used this time, Maureen, but it seemed appropriate.

The War of Words

© David Campbell 04/11/16

If eyes are windows to the soul
then yours must be as black as night,
for cruel words all take their toll,
and now you cannot put things right.

There are so many down the years
who’ve suffered from your vile abuse
in language that has prompted tears
as you have thoughtlessly let loose.

I don’t believe you cannot see
the damage done by what you say…
perhaps you simply disagree
to let your anger have its way.

But when those words are hurled about,
a hurricane of bitterness,
they’re tirades we could do without,
for all they do is cause distress.

So when you come to seek support
with honeyed words that speak of trust,
your pleas will often come to nought
because your name has turned to dust.

While those who’ve followed will soon learn
how empty are your many boasts,
and then their loyalty will turn,
and they will fade away like ghosts.

One day you’ll realise the cost,
regretting what you’ve said and done…
you’ll understand that you have lost
a war of words you thought you’d won.

Very topical in more ways than one David.
Thanks

That's fine David :D - you've made it count and that's what matters - I like your ' hurricane of bitterness', an inspired line.

Too true - too often!

Excellent as always, David.
