Homework #2 WE 11/3/19 - Sonnet on Love's Seasons

Well, as promised, Maureen - here is my second effort at a sonnet addressing the sentiments of Sir Walter Raleigh. After posting my first one I thought I'd better get right into it before my errant Muse took off shoe shopping or some such thing!

This one is a Petrarchan sonnet ...

Sonnet on Love's Seasons

The heady Spring of youth has long since passed.
Soft Summer breezes hold the chill of Fall,
and yet I feel their glow as I recall
the way we've built our house of love to last.
How could we know the years would fly so fast,
that aging's grip would hold us both in thrall?
And yet your smile makes sweet its bitter gall
and throws a light on shadows it has cast.
The scent of Winter permeates my heart,
but I will be content to count the days
and fear will be forgotten when I see
within your faded eyes the steadfast gaze
unchanging, as it was right from the start -
and know that I love you, and you love me.

Oh! I love a touch of romance, this is quite delightful - any lover should be over the moon were this written for them, a perfect gift for an anniversary, beautifully framed, printed on old parchment (or use weak coffee on modern day thick paper and slightly singe the edges ) Something lovely to place on a wall or dresser. It could even become an heirloom piece down the track. Well done you

I was going to begin like this: “To me, fair friend, thou never canst be old ...”

But then I realised someone has already done that!

Oh well imitation is supposedly the sincerest form of flattery - at the end of the day there are only 26 letters in the alphabet and words have all been used before somewhere by someone before - so chances are good, whether we know it or not, that at some stage of our writing we will be cloning someone else's words and arrangement of them. There is nothing new under the sun

Good on you Shelley, a very romantic flavour. Have you ever seen that film on Raould Dahl's story " Esiotrot " It's about romance in old age, starring Judy Dench and Dustan Hoffman as the oldies. ,

Yes!! I just love "Esiotrot"! Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman are just perfect in it.

It is one of those wonderful movies that is simple on the surface but underlined with so many layers of emotion.
