Cass please don’t take offence at what our mates are saying, you will find they are really only trying to help, there are a lot of rules concerning poetry. I like you write for myself to read out loud to other people and find it does not always fit the “rules” but I can make it work.

Me being a Western Australian get what you are saying about Kalbarri, It is one of my favourite haunts, thanks for the words.

Poetry is Poetry no matter what style you write it in or even if you simply write it down as it comes.

No one has the right to dictate to anyone how or when they should do something that they enjoy.

Just because others need order and rules to make the creative juices flow does not give us the right to impose our view on the world on others.

The paradigms that control the lives of some simply do not mean a lot to free spirits.

Regarding the structure of the poem - I believe there is a big difference between written poetry and poetry to be performed.
One of the best known poets in WA - Corin Linch - has a huge audience throughout the state as he recites on ABC radio (at some ungodly hour of the morning, I might add!! ) and people love his poetry. But it would never place in a written competition, so he just doesn't enter them. But he is nevertheless very successful as a poet. I agree with Stephen - if it works for you, keep it up. I believe Zondrae mentioned once that your recitals really capture an audience, and that is the important thing.
Me, I'm a bit pedantic about rhyme and rhythm when I write, and like to have it technically correct,(Well, I try!! ) but I still appreciate a well painted picture such as yours.

May I say, in defence of the style that Cas uses, that -
Firstly.. English is not Cas's first language. He is a proud Australian by choice.
Secondly.. Cas has many followers who are unable to get around, as he has done in the past, and they really appreciate his 'travelogues'. Cas has toured widely and his discrptive verse are truly educational.
Thirdly.. if you ever get the chance, you should listen to Cas read one of his poems (with your eyes closed) then you will see the beauty he writes about.

While his poems may never win a 'written' competition they stand up against anything I have heard in the way of scenic comentary. His love of Australia dominates. I have had the pleasure of hearing his poems at several Illawarra Folk Festivals in the past and look forward to hearing him again one day.

Good on you Zondrae.
Cas Van Loon is well known around the folk scene as someone who writes of this country with utter love and dedication. There may be technically better writers but no one writes about Australia with such complete passion.

Good on you Cas. I first met you at Bungendore Several years ago. Write in your own style. Tell it your way. It's your story and that is Australia as you see it. And the pictures you paint are often far more vivid than many other writers can tell with their R R M. So go to it Mate keep writing
