I agree with what David said. Personally I mostly use italics only because I like the look of it in a layout I suppose not for any technical reason - other than it gives a cleaner finish to a printed page IMO.

Very clever David, and such an original use of the prompts again too! Also, I agree with your summary about the traditional usage of speech marks, and always use them when someone is speaking. To me it makes everything so much clearer.
