perhaps neville you could try, (in the words of the great Dalai Lama), 'observing yourself from without'...a state of meditation, when conscious and subconscious blend ..this is when creativity kicks in..it is also called getting into the 'zone'..a place from where Beethoven no doubt composed his greatest masterpieces..I imagine good old Henry probably got into this state whilst humping his bluey away from the hustle and bustle and perhaps under the influence of a nip or two of good Irish whisky.
I find myself getting into this zone whilst driving on the highway..the monotony of driving allows the conscious and subconscious to merge..this can get a little dangerous, trying to write down those gems and pearls that emerge during such times..perhaps i should invest in a portable recorder..
My advice to you..get in your car ..take a long drive and join us in Tamworth)...next weekend and take your notebook and pen ( or recorder preferably) ..This is when Henry Lawson wrote his best, whilst 'on the road' en route to anywhere...I also think todays busy busy world stifles our creativity...'there is a universe within, if you can but find it'..as Dalai would say..

Re: Poetic Inspiration
G'day Tom. creativity is a mysterious process.
I will aim to get up to Tamworth but I think I'll stay in the conscious zone for the trip because there's a heap of speed cameras on the Highway between Singleton and Tamworth.
