A tale about a bush walk early last year at Springbrook on the Gold Coast hinterland

Bushwalk Splendour


We stood and watched the waterfall cascade
to a dazzling vivid rainbow at its base.
Quite a strange occurrence we’d not seen before,
a kaleidoscope that seemed way out of place.

All the day was sunny, no cloud did blight the sky,
no hint of rain around the site at all.
The rainbow thus, a mystery that nature held in store,
mingling with the spray from off the fall.

Perhaps it was the angle as the sun’s rays touched the stream
on its plunge one hundred metres from the top.
Whatever was the reason, there was magic there galore
which we, the viewers wished would never stop.

And the splendour it continued, as we reached the lofty lookout
appropriately named “The Best of All”.
What an aspect this enjoyed, we all stood there in awe,
at a vista that forever would enthrall.

It seemed that we had seen about the best this day could serve,
a walk where all our appetites were whet.
But, like the television ad, believe me there was more,
twin waterfalls, a sight we’d not forget.

Just one more dimension to add on to the day,
a track ‘neath hanging rocks to view the falls.
Winding round behind them, gaining some rapport
with nature fielding our applause and calls.

If all bush walks were like this one we’d line up every day,
at least that seems to be the case for me,
prime example of the turn of phrase we can’t ignore
that says the best things in our life are free.

It is a beautiful spot Jeff especially after rain when the falls are running.

Went there in the drought when the falls had stopped and found it a completely different feeling all together. The path you mention behind the falls is truly magical. Purlingbrook falls - even the name is lyrical - purl·ing, purls. To flow or ripple with a murmuring sound. n. The sound made by rippling water.

A lovely spot Springbrook. It's recorded 600 mm of rain late in January so, the falls would really be flowing now.
