Another list
Since I had a bit of time to waste, I tried to think of all the lines or extracts from Australian Bush Poets that have been immortalised in our culture and which would be immediately recognisable to just about everybody.
This is my list.
* " We'll all be rooned said Hanrahan "
P. Hartigan
* " A thumbnail dipped in tar"
A.Paterson
* " I had written him a letter "
A.Paterson
* I love a sunburnt country "
D.Mackellar
* "By channels of coolness "
H. Kendall
* " the dog sat on the tuckerbox nine miles from Gundagai "
J.Moses
* "the pub with no beer "
D.Sheahan/G Parsons
* " There's a track leading back "
J.O'Hagan
* " two things stand like stone, kindness in another's
trouble, courage in your own "
A. Gordon
* Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong "
A. Paterson.
There might be more , that's all I could think of that I observe are very very well established in our speech and writing.

It's amazing isn't it. They won't come to you while you're trying to think. I'm sure I know a few more.

How about 'Murder bloody Murder cried the man from Ironbark' Every kid of my era remembered that line
I knows a bloke who knows a bloke (Dennis) There's a fair few similar of his you could choose.
'And you and I were faithful mates all through the roaring days'
I was trying to think of something of Henry's, being a prospector probably influence me with this. But of the top of my head I couldn't think of any particular one, perhaps someone else can.

Maureen !!!
I think you're right Frank, there must be some more, I can't think of any more.
I saw " we'll all be rooned said Hanrahan " used as a heading in a national newspaper article about climate change, probably about six weeks ago.
Marty...." a grunt was all reply she got" my wife uses that on me !!! Not true !!!
Terry...I saw in a newspaper article " hasn't any opinions hasn't any idears " from Lawson's Middleton's Rouseabout.
I did thought of one more....Dorothea Mackellar's " the wide brown land for me "

There’s one just up the road from us coming in to town, it went up after our recent bush fires
“ I Love an Unburnt Country” just dropping the “S” changed the whole meaning.

That's interesting Dave. It's interesting that they assume that people understand the reference, shows how deeply Dorothea Mackeller's poem has got into our consciousness. .
