a pantoum - UNDER THREAT

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Sun Apr 13, 2025 2:17 pm

The pantoum consists of a series of quatrains rhyming ABAB in which the second and fourth lines of a quatrain recur as the first and third lines in the succeeding quatrain; each quatrain introduces a new second rhyme as BCBC, CDCD. The first line of the series recurs as the last line of the closing quatrain, and third line of the poem recurs as the second line of the closing quatrain, rhyming ZAZA.

A koala feeds, her fur shines brightly.
Nestled in the old gum tree.
Her tiny joey clings on tightly,
far too young to be set free.

Nestled in the old gum tree
where soft gentle breezes blow,
her tiny Joey hangs on tightly
viewing the treetops far below

Where soft gentle breezes blow,
Eucalyptus scent the air.
Viewing the treetops far below
gives no insight to their despair.

Their habitat is under threat.
Her tiny joey clings on tightly.
They haven’t felled this section yet
A koala feeds – her fur shines brightly
