The Aussie Volunteer

Post by Irene » Sun Nov 20, 2016 11:55 pm

I have some issues with some of our 'modern day' volunteers - There are many, many great ones out there, but more and more I am finding people to whom volunteering is more about the glory and recognition than just doing something for the community. Not saying those people don't do a great job in what they do, but where recognition is the motiviation, you find people want to take over and do it all for themselves, and think they are more important than others then because they do more. I firmly believe that people give what time and effort they can out of their lives - be it an hour or two, or many hours - but that time and effort is equally important in the scheme of things. I was horrified several years ago when, at a national volunteer day, organised to thank all volunteers for what they provide to their community, the committee organising the day then proceeded to announce that now they had awards for the 'super volunteers!' i ask you, who decides who is a 'super volunteer'????? And what is the criteria for one??? Then other experiences where one volunteer puts them above all others working to the same end (along with the topic 'Volunteers' for our upcoming meeting in Geraldton!! :D ) prompted me to write this.

There’s a unique aussie ethos that’s alive and true today,
That’s helped to build communities – the volunteering way.
Our volunteers are special and they’re found throughout our land;
They’re quick to put their lives on hold and lend a helping hand.

They don’t want recognition and no glory do they seek;
They sometimes work behind the scenes, sometimes they stand and speak.
There’s none that’s better than the rest, they’ve all a life to live.
Some volunteers may work for hours, if they’ve the time to give,

While others find an hour or two gouged from their busy lives –
Supporting our community – t’ward this each vollie strives.
And each of them hold equal stead – let’s stand them side by side
For each has given what he can – show each an equal pride.

But more these days we seem to see good vollies gone astray
Who want to ‘own’ a project and have all things done their way;
Communities who tend to judge on who’s seen doing most
And choose a few to give awards of which they then can boast.

But working in the background is an army often missed;
So many unsung heroes who walk silent in our midst.
They need no recognition, for awards they do not care,
But let us stop the singling out and recognize they’re there.

Remember, there’s no ‘I’ in team, we all must work as one,
Respecting every effort made – that’s how we get things done.
If you’ve a passion in your soul, let no one domineer.
Remind them there’s a team beside each aussie volunteer.
What goes around, comes around.

Indeed, Irene - I couldn't agree more! There is always an army of quiet achievers beavering away in the background, neither desiring nor receiving the limelight.

Cheers

Well said Irene. Short of helping a bit during Brisbane floods I've not been much of a volunteer. I am always quite amazed by the time and effort others contribute.

Just like the human body all the parts do a little or larger bit to make it function. But all are mostly needed.

To all those who volunteer we appreciate your efforts.
