The Aussie Volunteer

There’s a unique aussie ethos that’s alive and true today,
That’s helped to build communities – the volunteering way.
Our volunteers are special and they’re found throughout our land;
They’re quick to put their lives on hold and lend a helping hand.
They don’t want recognition and no glory do they seek;
They sometimes work behind the scenes, sometimes they stand and speak.
There’s none that’s better than the rest, they’ve all a life to live.
Some volunteers may work for hours, if they’ve the time to give,
While others find an hour or two gouged from their busy lives –
Supporting our community – t’ward this each vollie strives.
And each of them hold equal stead – let’s stand them side by side
For each has given what he can – show each an equal pride.
But more these days we seem to see good vollies gone astray
Who want to ‘own’ a project and have all things done their way;
Communities who tend to judge on who’s seen doing most
And choose a few to give awards of which they then can boast.
But working in the background is an army often missed;
So many unsung heroes who walk silent in our midst.
They need no recognition, for awards they do not care,
But let us stop the singling out and recognize they’re there.
Remember, there’s no ‘I’ in team, we all must work as one,
Respecting every effort made – that’s how we get things done.
If you’ve a passion in your soul, let no one domineer.
Remind them there’s a team beside each aussie volunteer.
