Mesquite wood

Post by Kym » Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:18 am

Our son-in-law is building a smoke house and so we are looking for some mesquite wood. Does anyone know where we can source some? Perhaps someone has a rellie has a property with mesquite on?

Thanks,

Kym.

I think between the arial spraying and Mortein Kym these are now in short supply

There are three known species of mesquite plus a hybrid present in Queensland. Mesquite has also been commonly called algaroba, Cloncurry prickle bush, or Quilpie algaroba. Mesquite, once a favoured shade tree around homesteads, has spread significantly in Queensland.

Mesquite (all Prosopis spp. and hybrids) are Class 1 declared pest plants under Queensland legislation and a Weed of National Significance (WONS). Class 1 pests established in Queensland are subject to eradication from the state.

You could however try BarBQ's galore - they may well carry it.

Cheers

Oh wow! Didn't know all that! Someone has been googling this morning ...

Since it is such a noxious weed and pest, we will offer a felling and removal service, free of charge.

Thanks for the info Maureen.

I knew hickory would be good (still need to locate some of it though) but we didn't know about apple (which probably isn't any easier to source really). I'm sure spotted gum is toxic though ...

Kym,

Hickory wood is also the Pecan Tree. So it you know anyone who grows Pecans, ask them for their prunings.
