After the arrival of the dark, perhaps. After the fall of night. Or dark. After the advent of the darkness. After the dark has come.
But you're right in a way, I guess, because we don't refer to the day-time as 'after light'. After the arrival of light. Doesn't have the same cache, does it. Well, I guess if English was consistent, it wouldn't be English.
What about the gloaming? That's one of my favourite words. Don't hear it much these days, though.

What about 'afterglow'? First, it's one word instead of two, so that's a bit different. But it doesn't mean darkness, does it, just a different sort of light. A reduced sort of light that persists for a little while after the glow has gone. Is that right? Seems right.
