A MAN WITH A MENAGERIE

One time I knew a pretty girl, it pleased me that we met,
I fell in love, she owned a dog, it was her favourite pet.
When she told me she was leaving, well my mind was in a fog –
I missed out on the woman, but I gained myself a dog.

It wasn’t too long after that, I fell in love once more –
she had a cat, a fluffy thing, our love seemed safe and sure.
I don’t know just what happened, but it left me feeling flat –
I missed out on the woman, but I gained myself a cat.

Well life moved on, I met a girl whose pastime was to ride,
I thought that this time this was it, the way I felt inside.
This time we both were married, but it ended in divorce –
I missed out on the woman, but I gained myself a horse.

To steal an old expression, love will often find a way,
I met a woman with a bird – she really made my day.
She left me with the worst excuse that I had ever heard –
I missed out on the woman, but I gained myself a bird.

I find myself in love so much, but I just don’t know why
I cannot keep the woman though I try and try and try.
They all just seem to leave me, anyway and anyhow –
I’ve gained a few more animals – a sheep, a pig and cow.

I’m a man with a menagerie, I need a farm or zoo.
I have so many animals, it’s more than just a few.
I hope the trend does not keep up before I lose my life –
that I stop collecting animals and gain myself a wife!

Spot on John LOL, But I can tell you from experience you are better off with the animals especially the dog.

Entertaining little whimsical verse. To me it looks like carefully chosen words and the rhymes are woven in so as not to 'clang' which is good writing as I understand it.

Glad you enjoyed the poem. They say a good poem should have a certain amount of truth in it too. It is pretty much how I ended up with my dog and my cat anyway (but the same woman owned both of them). I think I have just given away where my idea for the poem came from

I've got three dogs about 20 finches , two large goldfish, two hens and two chickens and at present A baby crested pidgeon who I'm fostering. Not much on conversation and you wonder why I do not use big words Nev ?


Interesting that the pidgoen when I let it out for a fly knows exactly where the ceiling fans are and how to get to my computor keyboard.


Gonna turn the fans on one day and see how it goes
