Ah, Maureen but that's the rub. Are the things that are considered 'monumental mistakes' somewhere down the track really mistakes at all, monumental or not? There's a better than average chance that in another 30 years or so the thinking of this time might be considered a monumental mistake and the thinking of 60 years or so ago might be considered the way we should have gone. One thing that comes to mind is the way we used to build houses in Queensland way way back, up on stumps, then we went to the low set brick on a concrete slab. For the first time in my life I am now living in one of those low set brick houses, as are all my neighbours, four of whom went under water. Sometimes I wonder about progress.

Well Leonie I think I mentioned to you that I might have to sell this place and get another low set as Mahalia is struggling with the stairs and no doubt given a few more years so will I...well guess who has re thought that one???? After seeing the water so close and seeing the damage done to the low set ones (how quickly we forget) a high set old Queenslander is looking pretty bloody magic to me. At least if they do go under they are a hose job - no ripping out of internal plaster walls and ceilings. You know exactly where all your power lines and plumbing lines are as they are out in the open - you get plenty of underfloor ventilation to dry it out and stop mould growing...I think the worst scenario I saw with them down here was that the floorboards in some had actually buckled - but didn't pay attention as to whether they may have been pine boards as opposed to hardwood.

I think my monumental mistake would be to move back into a modern lowset - better the devil you know.

The folks who built this style of home new their business.....and I am still learning.

Cheers

Maureen

Probably good thinking Maureen. I know what you mean about the stairs though, that was our thinking too. We thought about a lift as well but they are still pretty expensive, and no doubt would become inoperable in an emergency - no power.

That is true - I did consider those stair lift thingies????? but Mahalia is such a wuss I doubt she would go anywhere near one - so I am back to what was my original plan when I first bought the place - a ramp. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Cheers

Marty those new fangled shaped knives get more sales through their fancy shapes but they cannot compete with the old Green River or Mundial knives for skinning or for small things Josoph Rodgers or Barlow or Old Timer pocket knives they proved they were the best. and Manfred those cats they had to be flat out

Gosh you lot deviate from the original subject that I am responding to, so if it doesn't make sense to you, sort it!
