Just got a phone call from friends in Dannevirke which is on the top island and they have been asked if they can take displaced persons into their motel as there are hundreds of visitors and people now homeless in Christchurch. They have been flying tourists out minus passports as they have lost everything - a stroke of common sense.

She said there is a 29 story hotel complex which is being emptied because the ground beneath it is liquefying and it is sinking. Apparently this is a huge problem there as the ground appears to be turning literally into a quicksand beneath the rescuers and survivors feet and is actually oozing up from the cracks in the ground. This shocked me as I had never heard of such a thing.

Terrible times - and world wide
