Queenslander!!!

Post by mrrass » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:02 pm

In August this year the school at which I work held a poetry competition called "The Graham Fredriksen Memorial Poetry Competition" in memory of a great Kilcoy local. I wrote a poem called Queenslander!! for my class to recite. It was the first poem I've written and it went over very well. For all of you Cane Toads out there... I hope you enjoy it.

Queenslander!!

I’m proud to be a Queenslander, a native born and bred,
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, it beats maroon and red.
I love our Queensland sporting teams; I hate it when they lose,
I love the sound of “Queenslander!!!” when we defeat the Blues.

We live and breathe our sport up here; it means the world to us,
The cockroaches? Well they’re jealous, just listen to old Gus!!
We have the King and Lockyer, we have the mighty Mal,
The crowds up here go crazy, just listen to us yell!

We beat the rest in many sports; we truly are the best,
In Soccer, Rugby and Netball we’ve beaten all the rest.
The Roar! The Reds! The Firebirds; let’s call their names aloud,
These teams have thrilled our state this year; they’ve really done us proud.

But of course there’s more to Queensland than being good at sport,
There’s so much more to offer here, of which I’ll now report.
We have a state which truly is a beauty to behold,
We’ve mountains, beaches, forests, and reefs so very old.

From Goondiwindi in the south, to Cape York in the north,
From the dusty western outback, east to Fraser’s wharf.
We have so much diversity; we’ve almost got it all,
A state so large and mighty, there’s something here for all.

Tourists come from far and wide to laze on golden beaches,
Some take boats to search for crocs in Daintree’s farthest reaches.
Some go waltzing in the west in search of billabongs,
Whilst others hit the nomad trail, living out life’s songs.

I’m proud to be a Queenslander, they breed us tough up here,
Though storms and floods and cyclones have made for a tough year.
And here’s the secret to our state, a thing you can’t ignore,
Although life can be hard at times, our spirits always soar.

For a second there I thought Bob Pacey had posted under another name, but then I noticed the metre was pretty spot on. :D

That's a great little patriotic verse, Mr Rass.

Cheers, Marty

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.

Go to the top of your class Mr. Rass! You and Bob will be able to talk for hours and hours and hours about football. As for me, went right over my head sorry - except for the bit about what's to see in QLD... :) Nicely done!

Hard to believe you have never written a poem before!!
Very much enjoyed reading it - though I'm not into sport!! And if I was - it would have to be Aussie Rules, with the Eagles and the Dockers - rather than that soccer and rugby!!!!!

Looks like you are going to have to get writing, and post a few more for us now. You cannot stop after doing such a great job.
