Re: MAGICIANS OF THE PAST
It's an endless discussion Marty and Hully.
I just think we are missing the point if we see ourselves as gangs, fighting for turf.
As Marty has said, everyone has their likes and dislikes, Fine, I'll drink to that.
As long as we don't mistake likes and dislikes for good and bad or proper and improper.

Re: MAGICIANS OF THE PAST
G'day Neville and everyone else who has taken the time to comment on the poem. Thank you for your remarks.
It is in fact an old one that I wrote some years ago after noticing in an advertisement for a poetry competition that bush poets need not apply! The competition was being run by a group I recognised as being of the "literati" class (berets and polo neck sweaters) and vehement free versers.
I was at the time also attending a particular poetry writing group (which shall remain nameless) and I was the only one there writing or trying to write in rhyme.
I wasn't totally ostracized but many in the group thought Lawson and co totally old hat, out of date and of scant importance. The feeling was poetry had moved on and just as well too!
That was, if anyone is interested, the inspiration for the first line.
I do appreciate there is a little more to poetry than rhyme and metre, horses dogs and dunnies, but I also honestly think much of what is written in free or blank verse these days is the cause of the lack of popularity of the art. How can something become popular if no one but the author understands it(and I think that is often debatable.)
I have read some (but few) wonderful free verse poems that probably convey the essence of the bush and this country better than most other poems but they were and are totally accessible and understandable poetry.

What's wrong with polo neck sweaters
I suspect that the people you are describing Vic, are more interested in politics than literature .
I think real literati, whatever their preferences, understand very well that poetry is a " broad church ".

Re: MAGICIANS OF THE PAST
No Neville, I am afraid that the real literati ( that is the crowd who control our current literature) have their very own fixed views about what is suitable and what is not hence the drivel that is passed off as poetry and art these days.
I once asked one of the polo neck beret wearing set to explain his latest poem so that I could understand it and his reply was that it was beyond explanation and or understanding.
Have a think about that one Bob!
