Love
Took part in a poetry debate where the subject was, "Love is not what it is cracked up to be!" This was my contribution:
LOVE!
Love...bah, humbug and fiddleledee,
don't talk about love to me.
Love is now that outdated thing,
about which only mooning morons sing;
Have a look around and you will see
love is not what it is cracked up to be.
“Love” is the worst word ever spoken,
think of all those hearts so cruelly broken
all because some fool said,
(Probably when they were off their head)
"I loves you......... I really do
and I want to spend me life with you!"
Love is another four letter word
that many wish they had never heard;
love is the most ridiculous sentiment
an unneeded, dreadful, dire impediment,
'tis nothing more than an empty thought
of the silliest most useless sort!
No, have nothing to do with love anymore,
it will make you suffer and make you poor,
when someone says they love you,
be well assured it isn't true,
because love, I say and I'm sure you see,
Is not what it is cracked up to be!

Good on you Ross. No, it was just a matter of participating in the poetry debate and you don't get to choose sides. I really am a true romantic at heart!

Yes Neville, some folk festivals stage poetry debates. A subject is decided and the debaters respond in verse. The Poetry Debate at the National Folk Festival always draws an audience of thousands. The debate I refer to was at the Cygnet, Tasmania, Folk Festival a couple of years ago.
