LIVE AND LET LIVE

LIVE AND LET LIVE

The cause was noble – for a wife must show support and avoid strife.
Today there would be no escape, from freezing winds around the nape
of her neck, and feet frozen stiff - and now she caught the tangy whiff
of wood smoke from the campfire burning, for a hot cuppa she was yearning.

He checked the ropes with eagle eyes and hammered tent pegs, as sunrise
stained clouds with dusty shades of pink, nightingales notes did rise and sink
away into the morning light - two wallabies watched, then both took fright
bounding away through gidgee thick – reflex saved them, they were quick.

Between the sheets of canvas green reposed a rifle. Silvery gleam
from blued barrels metallic sheen. Was this what wallabies had seen?
She knew it was instinctive flight that made them disappear alright.
Although perhaps her mirrors flash – had made them from the campsite dash.

She hated hunting, camping too – but wives must do what wives must do.
But if she could she’d spoil his thrill, by spooking things that he might kill.
She’d claim that she was not aware a cracking stick would the game scare.
But did she know? Indeed she did – for she was once a country kid.

Oh I love this one. I'm a camper, love it, can't get enough of it, and nature to me is to be enjoyed not destroyed. Great one.
Cheers

I grew up on the land Marty, and I understand the need to put food on the table, but I can never understand the need to kill for the fun of it, but we're all different, thats what makes us what we are.
Cheers

I'm with you Sue every step of the way - can never see killing as a sport. :( Have no problem with killing feral pests that are destroying a livelihood or taking out the odd Buck roo or feral goat for tucker, but to kill just for the sake of it. How is that fun or sport. Always hated sending any of our sheep to the sales yards knowing full well where they would probably end up - always thought they deserved so much better, but that was never my call.

I was disappointed that you chose to " explain " in the last stanza. Just my preference, I think the picture is stronger without spelling it out. I understood the situation before I got to the last stanza. :)

I still have firearms in my gun safe and at time have a need to use them but I am against wanton destruction of wild life for the sake of sport. That’s just vandalism.

But if you are going to eat meat something has got to die!

And camping how could you not like camping? Mind you we don’t sleep on the ground any more.

Nothing to be sorry about Maureen :P Just my thoughts on an approach to writing, make of it what you will. :)
