I really like it Marty!
One thing that did catch was July - it's an awful word - a bit like Julia - hard to use. Maybe try that winter's afternoon...or something similar - just a thought.

I relate to Boofs dilemma - we had a storm come through just after lunch one day - same scenario. The sheep had only just been shorn and counted and let out back into the paddock. As the rain hit them they literally fell in their tracks and died. We lost over 100 sheep in a matter of an hour other properties lost thousands on that day. that's one of the reasons that country radio stations( and also I have noticed it on the computer recently) give sheep alerts.
We were throwing them onto the back of the trucks and utes like bags of chaff, racing them over to the shearing sheds where Mum and Dad both well into their 70's were drying them off with sheets and towels and old chaff sacks and spreading our feed hay over them to try to warm them up...we put 44 gallons drums in the corners stoked and blazing and still they died. We saved a lot but that was the worst day in my memory and you could do nothing for them, they literally gave up and once you saw them twist their head back over their back you knew they weren't going to make it.
Still don't fully understand why it happens something to do with liver failure - the shock of the cold rain on skin recently bared to the elements although we also lost some that had been off shears for a few days.
So I can well understand why in your area Boofs event held more sway and recognition as a momentous occasion than blokes landing on the moon etc. I think a similar scene would be re enacted through lots of sheep areas. Reckon your mates will be pretty choofed with your poem.
If I can find the one I wrote about our drama I'll put it up as well.
Cheers

It's a great story Marty - I can really picture the scene, although it sounds like there was a lot going on behind the scenes!

I love the way you've woven lots of history into it Marty.
