Hornet Season

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:18 am

I am trying to work - following some suggestions kindly given and then

Hornet Season

There’s a rumble then a grumble, then a shudder and a shake
then the sound of panicked feet upon the stair.
Then the doggy door does clatter, there’s a panicked pitter patter
as the big wuss seeks to hide beneath my chair.

It’s those bloody hornets flying. From my window I’m espying
that they’ve once again flown circuits, up then down.
Back to base they are now heading and it seems their gyro setting
says my roof’s the arrow pointing them to town.

I preferred F111’s they were sleek and they were pretty
not as noisy as these hornets are at all.
Though there was the odd occasion when their boisterous invasion
sent the plates crashing to ground from off my wall.

But I watched them with delight as afterburners alight
they would swoop and cast their light over our city.
I am not a hornet fan - neither’s Molly – bugger, damn
there goes another one – now I am getting shirty.

G'day Maureen,

I can see it clearly. Those poor misjudged hornets. I have been told (I won't try them out) that those big yellow and black ones with that very pointy tail, that looks lie it could sting you to death - are almost harmless.

Now I'm pickey, pickey... town and round don't rhyme. It probably doesn't matter as I can tell this one was a joy to write.

I think Maureen means The Hornets as in jet planes Zondrae, although I can picture the air force approving the colour scheme.

Yellow and Black. mmmmmmm

No offense please, Zondrae, I'll be picky too...town and round do indeed rhyme. It's a type of rhyming called assonance. It's only a matter of preference, not a matter of right or wrong to use partial or near rhymes. Sorry Zondrae.. I get the hives over rules that aren't rules.

G'day Maureen,

It is a pity your pm does not show up. There are often very little things I would like to share with you but won't because Uncle Neville is watching when I post them on the public site.

Isn't it nice when a man is wrong. My dictionary states very clearly that "a rhyme is when the terminal sound, of a line of verse, or word are the same." Note it says 'terminal' and 'same'. With this in mind, round and town cannot possibly rhyme. Terminal sound 'd' and 'n' are NOT the same.
I heartily agree that town and round are assonance. This is defined as "resemblance of sound, not rhyme"

Mind you - my husband thought he was wrong once, but he was mistaken.
