In my short time in the bush poetry world I have seen some truly abysmal "poetry" performed well and the performer get into the finals. Somewhere along the way the quality of the poetry was most definitely forgotten. I found that disappointing and I'd have to say it put me off somewhat.

It would seem that there is a problem in the performance field as such, is that an entertainer uses props to entertain the audience and as such is an entertainer.

Where as a performer, is one who uses only their voice and actions to advertise the words, that he or she is saying just like any reciter should.

So why not make the rule like as above. where one is to wear plain simple cloths and recite it as it should be and to disregard all the other regalier or risk a penalty.

We have a diverse membership and I'd like to believe that the ABPA is INclusive not EXclusive (you've elected a bloody Wog as the Pres after all) ... :D

Is 'exclusion' the appropriate response ?

Could there be other options ?

Yeah g'day all. You too Manny.

The other day at a meeting Shirley Friend gave me some advice. Competitions are good for development but your aim should be to perfect your poetry, no matter what kind or where and your object is to entertain and to be the best you can. Seems sound advice to me.

Perhaps if we wanted to raise the level a bit there could be a split competition where each entrant recites the same poem for the Judges in the compulsory section and then has a freestyle segment to display their own special talents. A bit like the old figure skating. It might even involve reading a poem the entrants have never seen with the other entrants excluded from the area within hearing range.??

Ah, it's probably a load of old cobblers but that's where my thoughts wandered.

Yours in verse (or ob verse if you have met me and know the truth),

Mal

PS Manny, did you get my email about your camera?

I myself personaly Manfred don't care if you are a bloody Wog or any other nationality as you put it just as long as you do your job well like any performer should be doing.
