Slammin' Bush Poets

Post by Zondrae » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:52 pm

An event held at the National Folk Festival, was the Bush verses Slam.

A couple of days before the festival I received an email (as did others) inviting we Bush Poets to gather a team of four to meet a challenge by the Slam Poets of "Bush V Slam Poetry". It was held in the Majestic, which was definitely 'their' territory. Our team (which was hurriedly gathered about an hour before the event) was made up of Peter Mace, Jim Brown,"Irish Joe" Lynch and Rodger Montgomery, all good Aussie Rhyming Poets. I am afraid I didn't think about getting the names of the other team, but I know they were all very experienced, young slammers and have done well in the ABC Slam contests over the past few years. I suspected the tent would be stacked against us..

The format was that the poems must not be over three minutes. There were five impartial judges randomly selected from the audience. I was asked to be one but declined because of my relationship with the 'Bush' team. Each poet was assessed at the end of his/her performance. Well to my surprise, and the delight of the crowd, the Bush Poets Team won. This was largely because of the mid contest challenge in which each team had to have a member draw a duck! Mind you if you consider our team, what chance did the Slam team really have? There is a photo but until I figure out how to resize it, I won't try to post it. It was great entertainment with a lot of booing and hissing and audience participation. Well done our team.

Slammin The Slammers is great fun.

I loooove the look on the young ones faces when you slag off at them in their own style.
