Nev, it's not an issue of 'right' or 'wrong', robust debate also helps to lift the standard ...

I am amazed at the standard of our bush poets. For what David (Campbell) regards as a 'throw-away' bit of whimsey, which the rest of us see as a bit of (non-serious) fun, the (il)literati regard as ......

1. A distinct feeling of calm that drops from your words onto the reading and creates a nostalgic note. A delightful piece

2. Steeped in Australian imagery, but for me still reflective of the life of the poet

3. Nice piece of prose here and asks the questions most want to know, but we find our own way that works with us.

4. Dreams are still worth dreaming - - good write

5. Very creative form... I like the the flow of the words

6. Very Clever write. Nice work!

7. clever! wonderful write! made me smile ;)))

8. creative...expressive to the core...

... and I've known these writers for many years. Occasionally they even use rich language in their pieces but they can only write in one style - 'free' ...
As rhymsters writing 'free', we understand the rules we break, the 'freesters' have trouble understanding iambic from anapaest and how to apply mixed metre - and that's without mentioning rhyme ...

It is harder to write well in rhyme and metre. We LOVE this form.
The (il)literati poo-poo our writings at their peril.
I stand by the comment, "It is generally easier for us to write free than it is for them to write in rhyme and metre".

I don't know, Manfred, I reckon the people who wrote those comments are just being polite. Surely they can see it's a joke? Or else they're thinking: "What sort of idiot writes a poem about a cosmic billabong?"

Incidentally (sorry Neville but this is getting away from poetry discussion again), those who wish to join the Church of the Cosmic Billabong need to know something about the origins of this ancient religion. It all began when the Great Jumbuck ascended Queensland’s Mount Pleasant and swallowed the ten sacred worming tablets, which was a pity, because they were pretty hard to read by the time he’d finished with them. Nevertheless, the Venerable Bard, Manfred, took it upon himself to decipher the hieroglyphs and unlock the secrets of metre and rhyme. (This he was able to do because, as a child, he had been cast adrift in a basket made of bulrushes on the Cosmic Billabong, where he had the good fortune to be discovered by Queen Glenny, Keeper of the Poetry Flame, as she took her crocodile out for a morning walk.)

Then the Venerable Bard disseminated the Poetic Word far and wide, aided by the High Priestesses Heather and Zondrae, who conduct services of worship whenever Aries (the ram) is ascendant in the House of Aquarius. On such occasions the members of the congregation gather in Glenny’s Shed, clad in the holy sheepskins, and dance with wild abandon until the blessed keg runs dry. During the course of the service it is customary for the Chief Elder, Bobbo, to be released from the Naughty Corner to take up a collection of miscellaneous metaphors and superfluous similes.

Here endeth today’s lesson.

And a very nice collection of metaphors I have as well DAVID, Oh hang on they are not metaphors at all They are golf Balls !!

Never gonna happen Dave I think I did something long ago that has resigned me to permanent residency in the cornor, so far back that I cannot even remember what it was or who put me here. So I've got a nice garden where I can lie back in the ferns, bracken and Heather ;) .

There were some fragments of manuscript found with basket in the bullsh-RUSHES. I was able to translate some ...

In the beginning was the word. And the word was formless and empty. And Davo said, “Let there be rhyme,” and there was rhyme. Davo saw that the rhyme was good. And Davo said, “Let there be a rhythm between the words and the rhyming to assemble many words together in gladness and joy.”
So Davo made it so. Davo called the rhythm 'metre' ... On the neи разница в языке было хорошо

(I couldn't translate that last bit) .... something about the Angel Anapaest ...

Davo is also called "The Great iamb"

G'day David,

Thanks for the elevation to the position of High Priestess. Does this mean I have to gaze interminably at sheep entrails and moan incoherently while dressed in diaphanous muslin, with twigs wound through my hair?

(.. mm now here did I leave my diaphanous muslin after I wore it last?)

oh no .. I am having a fit of 'there's a poem in there somewhere'..... to early and I have a doctor's appointment.
