Every Photo Tells A Story

The year was nineteen forty nine and Christmas Day was nigh.
Mum dressed us in our finest clothes, my brother Steve and I.
The old school hall was all decked out and filled with Christmas cheer.
We waited there so patiently, for Santa to appear.

Now Stevie, he had just turned three, of strangers he was shy,
And when the big man called his name, he looked like he might cry.
I told him not to be afraid and led him by the arm,
assuring him "you'll be OK, this man means us no harm".

The big man said "hello young lad, I have a present here".
But Stevie wasn't quite so sure and dropped his head in fear.
I said "he's rather shy you see, he's just a little lad
and Santa, he has been real good" [I lied, but, just a tad].

That year I got some matchbox toys and Steve a spinning top.
It spun and spun all round the hall and kept us on the hop.
And Jock, our friend who's sitting down,[they had more dough you see]
that year he got a brand new bike; I wished that he was me.

Fond memories old photos bring. Old Jock's now passed away!
The old hall doesn't stand no more, that's where the school kids play.
And Christmas time, it's not the same since Mum and Dad moved on.
But Steve and I will not forget, the good times now long gone.

How beautiful this is Sue - really enjoyed the read - well done - and what a lovely story you have woven around the photo. Thank you

Just a thought with this line
and Santa, he has been real good" [I lied, a little tad].
might it perhaps be more as we speak were it to say - and Santa, he has been real good" [I lied, but just a tad].

This reads faultlessly to me - could be a tear jerker of a performance piece
