Radio exposure for bush poetry

Post by Heather » Fri Jun 22, 2012 12:11 pm

Ok bards listen up.

I recently met Ian Nicholas at my work and he is on the board of Southern Community Media Association and runs a community radio station in Sydney. Below part of an email from him.

"I would love to receive "bush" poems from anyone and I am now considering putting them together into a regular program each lasting about five minutes, that I can circulate to community radio stations throughout Australia. I was having dinner at Kilmore with the CEO of the Southern Community Media Association (I am on the Board) and we discussed running a series on bush poetry on our Program Distribution System (PDS) which allows member stations to download programs at no cost. So receiving bush poems would be a great helping getting the program happening would be greatly appreciated. Also, I wouldn't mind getting hold of telephone numbers of the poets concerned and running a brief interview with them about their poem, so that it could bring more life to the poems."

This could be a great opportunity to give a plug to bush poetry. If anyone is interested let me know and I will pass on Ian's contact details.

Heather :)

Sounds a great idea Heather and anything that boosts the 'Bush' is worth supporting. Yes please.

Marty...if I'm with Frank then I'm in good company! Although are you sure they were my books? I've only published one bush poetry book so far ('Skycatcher', in 2007), and there was another Australian poet called David Campbell who was born in 1915 and died in 1979. There were quite a few books published in his name, and I occasionally get contacted by people who think we're one and the same. Just a couple of weeks ago a student emailed me via my website asking for help in analysing one of his poems called 'Snake'. It's free verse, but a terrific piece of writing and I'll sneak in one stanza below while nobody's looking.

Snakes are like a line
Of poetry: a chill
Wind in the noon,
A slalom in the spine
Setting ears back, hair on end.

It's well worth checking out the whole poem on the net.

Cheers
David

So those royalty cheques go straight in the bank, ay ;)

Just on those few lines I checked out that poem, David and you're right - it is a ripper.

Cheers, Marty (also the other one  )
