Lots of interesting speculation there, Vic, and I'm afraid I can't help you with any of it, though I do agree with you about poems vs crosswords. (Cross poems, perhaps? Crosser readers?)

I have never been a fan of Shaw Neilson's poems, but many years ago I did read his autobiography, and found it absolutely riveting. As I recall, the family lost the farm to the bank, and they were all blown to the four winds in search of a livelihood. They were obviously a close family, though, and what really stuck in my mind was the efforts Neilson went to to keep in touch with them all. He seemed to think nothing of walking from far western Victoria down to Melbourne to see his parents. He also seemed to spend a vast amount of his time in manual labour.

This is probably a redundant post...as the last time I checked I wasn't a 'male'...& I certainly ain't a 'master'....but being the narcissist that I occasionally am...I have a fondness for 'The Bride of St.Claire' (cos it's the ONLY poem I know that's reduced ''someone I know'' who is rough & tough...not to mention feral) to actual tears. (I musta been feeling left out or summat. I'm just not having an easy day....add self pity to the nacissist...oh dear.)
Seriously...I would genuinely appreciate comment on how that poem portrays an Aussie country woman? (I hope this isn't officially a hi-jack...oh dear.)

aummmm. aummmm. :|
