Yes Maureen - I wonder how much higher Sydney real Estate will have to rise before that becomes an option.

I think Henry had a State Funeral - I know I have a little memorial (read 'drink') for him on the 4th Sept every year - and on the 17th June...and other times....hic...

G'day Hully, Henry was the first person ever accorded a state funeral in NSW other than a Prime Minister or Premier etc and it was the largest funeral Sydney had ever witnessed.
The Prime Minister Billy Hughes and the Premier Jack Lang (Henry's brother in law) attended.

In 1997 I joined the Bourke to Hungerford Trek with the late John Philipson of Tamworth, and a caravan of some dozen or more vehicles, 4wd's etc. Transport was shared by the generous owners of suitable vehicles.
It was a most interesting few days, starting with a visit to Touralle Station on the Darling - Warrego Rivers junction where Henry Lawson and his mate Jim Grahame worked as shed hands for about a month leading up to Christmas 1892.
Leaving Touralle, they walked the 60 kays back into Bourke from where they set off on their 450 kay return journey to Hungerford and the Paroo River.

Geoff Bullock and Paul Roe read excerpts from Henry Lawsons books and poems, each relevant to the areas we visited, such as Fords Bridge, Lake Eliza (it was dry) etc and Hungerford.
I think there was only three rooms accommodation wise, but a large shed at the rear of the hotel, catered for those who fancied a wire bed, or a mattress on the floor.

Our group moved on to the waterless Paroo river before making the return journey to Bourke via Belalie Station, Engonnia (OGILVIE COUNTRY) and BARRINGUN (THE BREAKER)
There, at the Tattersalls Hotel we were the guests of the publican Mary, a devoted Australian Poetry fanatic.

I think it took Lawson and Grahame six weeks to do the journey.

Hi Frank,
Great to hear from you.
yes, you are certainly one of the famous faces that has graced the trek - although I wasn't involved in those days - others include Blue the Shearer, Campbell the Swaggy, 'Tractor' Rennick...among a host of Bourke rhymers and reciters - it is still pretty much as you remember it (things don't change quickly out here)

Great to hear from you Frank - was in your neck of the woods t'other day for a gig at 'Taste' - A good night.

cheers
