Op Shop Undies

Stephen Whiteside 24.10.2012

Life is tough. Money's short.
From our op shop I have bought
A range of solid clothes to wear,
And it has kept me from despair.

Over months, and even years,
When feeling on the brink of tears,
How often have I bought a shirt,
And bounced out feeling bright and pert?

A pair of jeans. A decent sweater.
These have left me feeling better;
Cheerful shirt or handsome coat
Have often stabilised my boat.

When scrounging hard to pay my tax
I've often turned to op shop daks,
And when I've felt I'm bound to lose
Life's game, I've purchased op shop shoes.

Alas, I learned, last Thursday night,
The screw had turned especially tight.
I'd have to face a challenge rare,
And purchase op shop underwear!

I'd always found a coupla bucks
For supermarket jocks. It sucks
To search the shelves and pace the floor
For undies some bloke's worn before.

Some had stretched. Some had shrunk.
Sad to say, some really stunk!
Some were baggy. Some were tight.
Lined up, they were quite a sight!

Some were yellow. Some were grey,
With holes to shine the light of day.
The ones that really got me down,
Of course, had narrow streaks of brown!

Those undies gave me quite a shock.
I think it's time that I took stock.
A poet and an inverse snob?
It's time I got a PROPER job!

I don't buy op shop stuff myself, but my kids do. Can you actually buy underwear at op shops? I have a feeling I had heard somewhere it was illegal.

Thanks, Marion.

G'day Stephen

I am sure that it is illegal due to issues with hygiene. It is still a funny poem all the same.
