Were any of the other doctors in your family poets or writers?

No. Another cousin studied Law, but never practised. He is now a full time writer - Richard Tulloch.

I had a writer in my family - my great grandfather's brother. He changed his name to John Wallace but his real name was William Harry Abbot McQuinn. I think he wrote novels.

Sorry Neville, I've realised we have hijacked your thread. It's your fault though - you do realise that don't you? :)

Turn your back for a few days and my how the threads weave on.

I remember the day Labor was sacked. We stood on the steps and shouted at Whitlam...'For Gough! For Gough!'

Or something like that,anyway.

Oh Stephen, you spent all that time writing a reply that entirely misses the point.

Gough was a barrister, he married into the family of a barrister.

Barristers are word-smiths, believe me I have spent many hours in the court room watching them. The dramatic flourish, the passionate word, the striking phrase, the masterful pause, the latin quotes, the satirical jibe, the metaphors, similes, and THE HYPERBOLE. It's all there. . Is that poetry. Most certainly.
Why do you think that they wear ancient wigs and flowing black robes? To draw attention to the fact that, as speakers, they are not ordinary, not like just anybody else, they are mystic, it is they who interpret and work out mysteries. They are poets.

Just ask Rompole of the Bailey, ask Shakespeare and Portia. Ask Perry Mason. ASK GEOFFREY ROBERTSON.
I can only admire such talent. I have all the Rumpole of the Bailey series on DVD. :D :D
