I guess most of us have our poetic moments.

...I think Gough was most un-statesman like when he made that remark. Pure narcissism & most off putting. Dignity would have delivered a much better quote....

(sorry Gough lovers...but he just put me in mind of a spoiled brat kindy kid who'd had his lolly pinched....sorta 'nah nah nee nah nah!'').....

I'd never really thought about it like that before, Glenny, but I can certainly see what you are getting at. I think people were spellbound (blinded?) by the quickness of his wit, and generally failed to notice the lack of maturity it betrayed.

Don't we all Neville?
I just think it's a tad crass to sook about it internationally. Perhaps he did have that ''quick wit'' but I'm more inclined to see him colluding with his speech writer to come up with ''a quote that will go down in history'' & then eagerly practising his moment of glory (revenge) ''performance'' in front of his 7 foot high bedroom mirror. I can't believe it was a spontaneous quote.

I don't give a running rats for political thuggery & their antics, & it was a poor show at the time, but I do care that our ''leaders'' seem to be bereft of any graciousness or dignity. (They should be more like me & never publicly complain....)

BTW...what did happen to the Governor General? Was he posted to Siberia...??
 Cheeers

Perhaps you're right. I can't recall the time frame. He couldn't have had long, surely.

He's probably under a table somewhere.... ;) What was his name again? :)

Glenny I was just a kid at the time but to my mind Gough came across as spitting the dummy. While I can understand that he would have been upset, acting with dignity would have gone in his favour.

No, I mean Gough could not have had much time to prepare his statement.
