A Peanut In My Pocket
© Stephen Whiteside 10.12.2012
Today I found a peanut in my pocket.
Crunchy. Tasty. Fairly fresh. Don’t knock it.
A bonus, for I really had no notion
It was there, and long ago had lost the docket,
If indeed I’d ever had one. A strong potion,
And liable to trigger great commotion.
Some folk find great pumpkins in their patches.
Unexpected pleasures come in batches.
A string of little things all going right;
A sudden shower that doesn’t spoil your matches;
Small events can conjure great delight,
And once again the world seems new and bright.
I whistle in the rain. I jump a puddle,
And feel at ease. I’m rescued from the muddle
Of daily life - a man of firm decision.
Each stranger that I meet I want to cuddle.
Negativity should fear collision
With me, for I’m filled with verve and vision.
Perhaps it might seem slightly odd, and funny.
I’d not feel better if I’d trapped a bunny.
It caused my listless sentiments to rocket
(Any little thing that saves me money…);
I’m living off the land, like Davey Crockett,
Because today I found a peanut in my pocket!

That's very good Stephen. Applause
I wonder who to-day remembers Davy Crockett. Not just an American hillbilly but a man of high principle who sacrificed his political career by standing up against those who oppressed the indigenous people of America. He was killed at the battle of the Alamo.
