Another New Year

Post by Stephen Whiteside » Tue Jan 01, 2013 8:53 am

Another New Year

...And so we bring in another New Year,
And ponder again just how to steer.
Think of the large, or think of the small,
The things that barely matter at all;

The lives, for example, of me and you.
What mean they in the great wide blue?
What mean they in the melting pot?
Hardly a fly's breath. Diddly squat...

Except to you, and except to me,
Which is quite enough that they ever should be,
So let us see if we can't imbue
With a bright frisson the year that's new!

Since a frisson ( I found out ) is a feeling of excitement or a thrill, I thought that maybe the first part of your poem actually negates that. ?? Is that what you meant ?

I think that all those young people who read your poetry in the school books, in some measure are touched by your spirit Stephen, so maybe your significance is much more than " diddley squat " ;) :) ( Not to mention the ABPA :) )

Happy New Year Stephen,

Do you make resolutions? I have been making at least one each year for the past couple and trying hard to stick to them.

What propelled me to respond here is the very small (but I found it stunningly descriptive) phrase you used of 'A/Fly's breath'. Wow, what could be more insignificant. Except, I suppose and as you have eluded, to the fly it is everything.
For me that is a .... stop, go back and read that bit again. ... moment that leads me to 'thanks for sharing'.
Your posts often give me a little stirring that sometimes end up in verse. and that leads to a couple of thank yous (plural) and I wish you all the success you deserve.

This was just one of those little poems I felt my way through, Neville. I suppose I did mean it as you suggest, but I can't say it was conscious. Thank you for your kind sentiments.

Zondrae, I don't normally make new year's resolutions, though this year I have made one - to go sleep next New Year's Eve at about 10 pm, and wake up bright and refreshed at about 6 am!

Thank you also for your generous sentiments. Nice to know I can touch you in some small way from time to time.
