Ooowah!

Post by Glenny Palmer » Sun May 12, 2013 6:28 pm

Ooowah. I did an '' it's '' where it should be an '' its ''.....spotted by my astute dear friend Ann...I told her not to tell anyone... :oops:

Don’t mention the apostrophe
by gad my grand orthography
would suffer- my typography
would ruin my biography
if word should leak; catastrophe!
The purpose of my life is to serve as a warning to others.

Easily done Glenny,

The thing that amazes me is I can spot most slip-ups by others, yet be completely oblivious to my own.

G'daay Terry,
That's the one mate...I do it all the time. ;) They say that the trick to proof reading is to read it backwards....??....mmmm.

Apostrophe, apostrophe,
©Heather Knight 11 Sept 2009

Apostrophe, apostrophe;
you can't forget the ‘postrophe.
It’s such a great catastrophe
to miss the damn apostrophe.

Some ‘postrophes show things belong
and some show letters moved along;
if you forget, it makes it wrong,
so don’t forget the ‘postrophe.

Now, to a word it is assigned;
some go in front, some go behind
and each a place it has designed;
the all important ‘postrophe.

It’s hard to know which way to use;
it could be who’s or maybe whose;
so must it stay or should you lose?
Where should you stick the ‘postrophe?

So don’t surrender, don’t give in,
with lots of practice you will win;
‘cause now you know that it’s a sin
to miss the damn apostrophe.

And if you use the ’postrophe
your thinking must be sound…
it’s nothing but catastrophe
to print it wrong way round!

(And getting it right saves editors an ’ell of a lot of correcting!)

How about the name of this part ('thread'? what do you call it?) of the web-site: "ABPA Members Poetry". I guess it's all too hard...

As is - Australian Bush Poets (missing apostrophe) Association. Something I brought up with the powers that be Stephen -but, it seems that the name was registered without the 'postrophe. I still think it could be put back on the web site because it's not a good look for a writing group.

Then there's
Members (missing apostrophe) Poetry

Users (missing apostrophe) poetry

Index of member's ('postrohe in wrong place) poetry

They are tricky little critters those 'postrophes. It's not that difficult once you learn the rules though.

It's fairly common these days to leave an apostrophe out of the name of an organisation, but the errant (or non-existent) apostrophes in the section titles are not a good look for a writing group. Assuming we're talking about more than one person in each case, it should be:

ABPA Members' Poetry
Index of Members' Poetry on this Forum
Members' Public Performances
Users' Bush Poetry
Yarn Spinners' Corner
