It's enough to drive ya balmy. They seem to like saying 'conducted under the auspices of the ABPA.' Is there any value in the ABPA producing a 'Guidelines for Conditions' & hammering that into them? I honestly don't think that they realise they are shooting themselves in the foot! at every turn....the dense blighters.

Leonie I won't enter a competition if the organisers compile an anthology from poems that have received places - for the reasons you went through. I want to keep control over my written work. I'm just a control freak really - ask anyone!

Whoever the judge was a Tamworth Heather some bloke named Jones who I never heard of before part of the Writing Group, That's why I suggested the ABPA should run the written comp as well.

Heather a control Freak NEVER     Oh I agree with you about publishing an anthology. I asked for one of my poems that got a Highly commended to be removed from a web site because I had already entered it in another comp.

Ok we have a lot of grumbles and I'm with Glenny perhaps our committee could draft a letter voicing our concerns to those comps that we all enter and let them know our feelings ? Is this a good way to go ?

Confusion deepens. When I check the certificate I received for my poem it says "winner" of the emerging poet category - not "first prize". I've emailed the organisers of that competition. I figure that if they consider that I didn't win first prize -then I didn't. :)

......they neeed to be more specific in their conditions eg. 'not have won an open category'...or whatever particular psychosis they are alluding to.

Definitely time the ABPA constructed a sensible uncomplicated 'Conditions Guide.' Send out a questionnaire to Members & employ the feedback, I'll help to construct the flaming thing, & I'd hazard a guess that some of our premier poets would chip in too...?? After all, we are supposed to be fostering the interest in, & calibre of, our Members are we not? This crud is taking the fun out of our favourite fun pastime.......and you can bet ya sox that 'they' aren't even aware of the problems they are creating....for writers...AND them silly bloody selves!

The problem is that if they have to specify every contingency the rules will tend to get longer and longer and more and more complicated. Uummh, come to think of it, life is a bit like that. What was that old song about rules? There was a line in there about putting up a sign to keep us off the grass or something.

No not that kind of grass.

So you keep it simple Leonie - like "can't have won first prize in an open competition or been published for profit" or something along those lines. There are competitions that do that. The Henry Lawson comp. (Gulgong) allows anything but poems that have previously won first prize as at closing date. They even allow entries under consideration in other competitions.

Some competitions have serious and humorous sections in which you can win 1st. 2nd etc and then they have an overall winner - NSW champs come to mind. So, if you have won 1st in the serious but not the overall, have you then won a first in "any competition"? Tricky isn't it?

Well I have to admit I have never really thought about it like that. I always assumed that when a poem won a first prize that was it, no matter what category it won it in. Sometimes it feels like the more I learn about this poetry caper the less I know. :| :)

Leonie, don't let the competition rules assume more importance in your mind than the poetry itself. You don't have to be familiar with the full ramifications of every rule in every competition. You don't even have to enter competitions at all...
