The kings New Cloths as sung by Danny Kaye
This is the story of the King's new clothes:
Now there was once a king who was absolutely insane
about new clothes and one day, two swindlers came to
sell him what they said was a magic suit of clothes.
Now, they held up this particular garment and they
said, "Your Majesty, this is a magic suit." Well, the
truth of the matter is, there was no suit there at all.
But the swindlers were very smart, and they said, "Your
Majesty, to a wise man this is a beautiful raiment but
to a fool it is absolutely invisible." Naturally, the
King not wanting to appear a fool, said,
"Isn't it grand! Isn't it fine! Look at the cut, the
style, the line!
The suit of clothes is all together
But all together it's all together
The most remarkable suit of clothes that I have ever
seen.
These eyes of mine at once determined
The sleeves are velvet, the cape is ermine
The hose are blue and the doublet is a lovely shade of
green.

Danny Kaye was a great actor, one of my favourites. Great on poetic entertainment e.g. The Court Jester where he does..
The pellet with the poison's
in the flagon with the dragon.
The vessel with the pestle
has the brew that is true.

The "emperor's new clothes" has been bandied about several times on this forum apparently as a criticism of contemporary poetic practice.
Before going along with it too easily, I think we should reflect on Stephen Fry's wise observation " so much easier to say that everything you don't understand is pretentious than to learn to discriminate between the authentic and the fraudulent "
And if we accept that the " emperors new clothes " is a valid argument, I think we should cautiously not assume that it only cuts one way.

Re: A rhyme is a rhyme is a rhyme.
With regards to the earlier example (by Dorothea Mackellar) ...
Grey rock monsters
Out of the grass
Heaved; lie staring;
Moths drift past.
Is this a rhyme, yes or no?
If it is, why.
If it isn't WHY??
If it's NOT a rhyme, what is it??

It is a rhyme. It's not a perfect rhyme, but a rhyme does not have to be perfect to be a rhyme. I would believe that it is a partial ( or slant or para ) rhyme, the effect is assonance.
It's no worse or weaker than any other rhyme, just different.
Baa baa black sheep
have you any wool.
Yes sir, yes sir,
three bags full.
One for the master
and one for the dame
and one for the little boy
that lives down the lane.
See, it's been traditional since time immemorial.

Re: A rhyme is a rhyme is a rhyme.
My understanding is:
room and doom rhyme - noon and moon rhyme
But room and noon do NOT rhyme.
This is an example of assonance. The vowel sound is the same but the terminal consonant is not.
Some words it is the terminal sound or syllable, not a single letter that must be the same.
A true rhyme is when all but the first syllable of two (or more) words are the same. It is often a less than perfect rhyme that is allowed (or used) but in every case the terminal sound is the vital thing.
Even in the case that the words have a totally different group of letters, the pronunciation must be the same.
There is,of course, the visual rhyme but that is another thing and even there noon and room still don't qualify as a rhyme.
