Australia Day 2014

Post by Bob Pacey » Sun Jan 26, 2014 5:06 am

I don't know about the rest of you lot but I've got a day off and I'm gonna make it a cracker.

Australia Day 2014

The early morning thunder woke me from my slumber
as the storm clouds out across the ocean roll.
I lay here quietly dreaming of the days events ahead
it’s four o’clock time for my morning stroll.

I rise and slowly stumble to the toilet out the back
dodging raindrops as they patter on my head.
Whilst sitting in the outhouse everything seems so at ease
but I’m thinking I’d be better off in bed.

I slip my brand new joggers on with heavy woollen socks
tie the laces and think “I must be bloody mad.”
But the dogs are at the back door letting out those little whines
I’m sure they’re saying hurry up now Dad.

The rains slowed to a drizzle as we stroll along the track
headed for the wide expanses of the beach.
where we’ll watch the sun arising above the surf at dawn
I’m just glad such beauty lies within our reach.

I’m running through my list of poems I’ve stored there in my head
I’ve got a show today so need to get them right.
Then as we round the corner the sun peeks into view
like a golden orb with sparkling rays so bright.

I never would have thought that simple things could bring such joy
but I’m older and I see things different now.
I can appreciate the beauty of a sunset or a dawn
knowledge comes with age I think somehow.

The dogs are off and running just like they always do
kicking up the sand and sniffing here and there.
I marvel at the way they stop and stand with noses high
as they sniff some secret on the oceans air.

The beach is such a peaceful place especially at this hour
no one else gets up this early Sunday morn.
Can a person love a country I somehow think they can
especially in the place where they were born.

Leads back on we’re heading home the rain looks to have gone
the day ahead is looming bright and clear.
I think we might come back again sometime this afternoon
play some cricket on the beach and drink some beer.

Celebrate why we’re Australian with our loved ones and our friends
appreciate the freedom of this land.
The things we take for granted but the ones that really count
simple differences that make this country grand.

There are things that get forgotten in our busy daily lives
sometimes it does us good to stop and say.
We are unique and yes we’re different from every other race on earth
So celebrate just who we are today.

So right Bob. I know it's through rose coloured glasses but the world turned more slowly when I was young.
Enjoyed the poem. Hope you enjoyed the day despite having to work.
Cheers
