What Should I write ?

Post by Bob Pacey » Thu Feb 27, 2014 5:54 pm

I started out to write a Poem
I do it all the time.
Should I make it free verse
or should I make it rhyme.

I pondered on this question
and I don't know what to do.
I really just could not decide
that's why I'm asking you.

Someone told me long ago
that free verse is a crime.
The only reason people write it
is cause they just can't make it rhyme.

So tell me folks what should I do ?
is there nothing set in stone.
Is it ok now not to rhyme
or leave well enough alone.

Some verse is free, and some verse is dear.
Bush verse ain't free. It's expensive, I fear.

I love to write rhymed verse
Which I think would be a whole lot worse
If it was that stupid stuff called free
Which really has no appeal for me
It makes no poetic sense
And rather than just sitting on the fence
I'll join the true believers
Who do the proper and really good stuff that will rhyme
All the time.

Bob, when you take your pen in hand
'tis important that you understand,
If you want folks to like what you write
the metre and rhyme must be just right,
Because Mate, there is nothing worse
than that pretentious free verse!

Then why Vic have you given us a sample of irregular metre. Isn't irregular metre a feature of free verse.

My poems are always good and nice
I check the metre, check it twice
Use cool words like dude and guy
(though other poets ask me why)
And most important are my rhymes
Cause I'm a stickler for that
