Good story Terry, had me intrigued. I, for one, would be very interested in your "junk" and the stories that it holds.

Why did they call it a Poverty Tin?

Thanks Maureen,

Interestingly enough that was my original idea; a book of short stories with the odd poem.
The theory being that more people may enjoy the stories and after all we all know poetry doesn't appeal big-time to the general public.

I have considered attaching a suitable photo with these yarns but don't know how.

As for allowing stories to be published, I've always believed that both stories and poetry are meant to be shared.

A lot of old timers had what they called a Poverty Tin (or Box) in various forms hence the name of this yarn; I guess a writer should always remember a reader may wonder what the hell he's talking about?

I've found a couple of others as well.

I would guess that this ones owner was doing a bit of Dryblowing and the small nuggets were probably a few of the bigger pieces he was finding; a lot of dryblown gold is often small. He'd sell of the small stuff and perhaps even the odd bigger one if he got lucky and found one; I could tell you some great yarns passed on to me over the years by old timers I've known.

I have a photo of this poverty tin somewhere but like the tin I'd need to find it - no mean task.

That's what most kept them for.
They'd be praying things never got that crook but if they did, they'd have the old poverty tin as a last resort.
