Homework Oct 6: A Mouse in the House

Post by David Campbell » Thu Sep 25, 2014 10:31 am

A Mouse in the House

There’s a mouse in the house, said my grandad,
and it’s using its very own mousepad
to sit there, quite bold,
and tell me I’m old,
a decrepit, decaying grey nomad.

It is mocking my technical folly,
and the fact I’m an internet wally,
a Luddite, a nong,
who gets it all wrong,
but from now on that’s changing, by golly!

I’ll discover why bytes must get bigger,
whether kilo or mega or giga.
I’ll suss out that cloud
if I am allowed,
and why phishing is fishy…go figure!

I will branch out to tweeting on twitter,
learn why spam isn’t lunch meat, but litter
that stuffs up and clogs
our email and blogs
as a cyberspace virus transmitter.

I’ll determine why cookies aren’t bikkies,
and why mice are not Minnies or Mickeys,
why Google is king,
why Yahoo’s now Bing,
and why notes that I take are called stickies.

But perhaps I am being too fancy…
this internet stuff makes me antsy.
So just like my pa,
with thumbnail and tar,
I will dash off a letter to Clancy!

Thanks, everyone. There's quite an interesting interview online from a couple of days ago about the ways in which the internet/technology is rewiring our brains. For example, our tendency to text rather than actually talk on the telephone. It's with Douglas Coupland who has written a fair bit about this in recent years. It's only 9 minutes long and you can find it at: http://video.ft.com/3807882765001/Dougl ... e-And-Arts

Cheers
David
