IF WISHES WERE HORSES - h'work w/e 18.1.16
Just my quick 10 minute scribble to kick off the new year
IF WISHES WERE HORSES … Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet
I guess that we’ve come down to earth
on this a brand new day.
One brand new year untouched, unharmed
pristine in every way.
Our woven fantasy must end
and that head in the clouds
now sees that, in reality
we’re just one in the crowds.
The Christmas rush is over,
it’s now the January sale
sells discounted cards and baubles
in economies of scale.
The stores now display Hot Cross buns
their profits never fail.
They never let a chance go by,
cash is their Holy Grail.
A desert island’s currency
of coconut and crabs
exchanged for peace and harmony
to me’s a scene that grabs
immediate attention as
I visualize the scene …
white sand, lagoons and waving palms.
Alas, it’s but a dream.

I like this Maureen. A lot of truth in there - I was lucky enough to live on a gorgeous small island for two years as you know, and it certainly brought a few things into perspective!

I agree Catherine it would - same for me when living out in the bush, it's amazing what we can do without if we have to, or what we can use instead of something else to do a job.

Well said, Maureen - a good example of what we've been talking about in another thread - that rhyming poetry can be used effectively to comment on current issues.
Nice enjambment, by the way
Oh, and I like the title ... it's a long time since I heard that saying "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride". Took me back to childhood!
Cheers, Shelley

I like it Maureen. Some of the most isolated spots are the most idyllic. It's easy here on Maggie to forget there is a rat-race out there just across the bay.
Cheers

I have fond memories of Maggie from my time living in towns ville.
