Aussie As She Is Spoke

Post by Bob Pacey » Thu Dec 09, 2010 4:22 pm

Aussie As She Is Spoke

We Aussies are spectacular
We always have a word to suit
And to use our own vernacular
We're flaming bloody beaut.

That little shed in the back yard
Though it sounds really funny
The Poms call it a privy
But to an Aussie its a "Dunny".

Any man can be a bloke
be they young or very old
And we call a girl a " Shiela "
and a good ones just like gold

When we're flat out working
Well it's really just "Hard Yakka "
And a bloke who doesn't do their share
a flaming bloody "Slacker".

Now if I said that I was "Skint"
I've got no cash ya know
But when I say I'm sitting " Flush "
Well mate, I'm really in the dough.

If we take a day off work
it's a "Sickie and we're "Crook"
And if we chuck a turn and spit it
Then we're just a flaming "Sook".

When everything is going well
I'll say "Fair Dinkum" that'll do
But when the grey clouds gather
You can bet I'm in " The Poo ".

A "Jackie Howe's" a singlet
And we wear them wet or dry
"Murphy's Law " says what will be will be
And to " Kark It " is to die.

"Ridgy Didge" means its the truth, mate
Out "Back-o-Burke" is way out west
A "Bobby-Dazzler is the greatest
A shearing "Ringer" he's the best.

We can be "Flat Out Like a Lizard Drinking"
Or like a "Goanna up a Tree"
"On The Nose" and bloody stinking
And "Blind Freddie" just can't see.

A "Ratbags" not worth knowing
"The Territory" that's way up yonder.
And a "Derro" likes his grog mate
When we go "Walkabouts" we wander.

We can run 'round like an " Headless Chook "
Or like a bloody "Hairy Goat "
And when trouble strikes you'll find us
"Up the Creek in a barbed wire boat".

"Matilda" is the swag I carry
And a " Heelers" my blue dog
When I'm drinking beer or Bundy
I'm probably "Pissed" and on the " Grog"

If I'm "Cockey " mate, I'll have a go
A Doctors sometimes called a "Quack"
A "Joe Blake" is a bloody snake
The "Never-Never's" way out back.

When things are good they're "Bonza"
I eat me "Crib" when I have lunch
A "Dead Ringer" looks the bloody same.
A "King Hits" a knockout punch

When we say a blokes a "Drongo "
Well he's got no bloody brain
A " Molly-Dookers " is left handed
"Send Her Down Hughie's" bring the rain.

If you yell and scream and shout at me
You would say you gave me "Curry".
And if you need to have a smoke
Well it's a " Fag " mate or a "Durrie".

" Rafferty's " says there's no rules at all
And to have a "Kips' a nap or sleep.
To " Duckshove " is to dodge a job
A " Jumbucks " just a sheep.

Yeah it's unique to us Australians
But every word just seems to suit
But ya really must admit it, mate
Aussie's flaming bloody beaut.

G'day Bob...
Stone the crows an' stiffen the flamin' lizards! Geez, you talk good lingo cobber! Puts a grin on a old geezer's phiz, mate. :D
Seriously but, you remind me that we lost our "Glossary" page when the old site went down the gurgler. Maybe we should get a new one going? Could be a while before we can access the old one from the archives, and even then we won't be able to add to it.

Cheers, Will.

Many years i picked up a little book at the Stockmans hall Of fame called The Ringer's Book
Of Outback trems & Phrases.

Great read if you can get hold of a copy.

G'day,

Now I am not one who usually uses this type of 'strine', but in view of my recent award for a poem written in the style we think of uniquely CJ Dennis, I guess I may try another one. Now I will have to think of suitable topic. Peter Mace made a suggestion over the weekend after I was telling a yarn...mm mm bears thought.

Thanks for sharing this Bob.
