MISTRESS OF MY SEASONS – New England Autumn

Winner, 2012, ‘Rolf Boldrewood Literary Award’, Dubbo, NSW.

When Autumn in its languid rush
paints trees and ferns with idle brush
and gifts the golden hues to sight
with ambers all in cooling light;
ere winter’s frosty tongue and tail
will lick and whip late summer’s sail,
then lovers will, as lovers do
entwine their love in one, as two.
Before the time of lush green grass
and plump ripe fruits must come to pass;
before the first soft crack of frost
and in the counting, not the cost,
then lovers will, as lovers must,
consign their caring into trust.
When in love’s season lovers lie
full fruited ’neath the Autumn sky
to wait the winter’s passing mood,
for birth of spring that winter wooed,
then lovers will, as lovers trust,
bring forth the gift that lovers must.
