Just to get back to the proper commentary ;)

Those two verses of Bob and Marty's are interesting.

I was reading a poetry instruction book by one of the " literati " and he explained how poetry is found all round us in our culture. He said that the creative barrackers at cricket or football matches were a great example of spontaneous and entertaining poetry.

One thing ..., I think for our purposes we need to think of something unexpected and new for the content. Sports satirical verses can easily descend into hackneyed and predictable expressions.
And just because jokey sports verses might be considered " lightweight " I don't think that takes away the need to revise and polish up the verse into something that befits our intention to craft works of poetry.

p.s. I was watching the paint dry the other day Zondrae, much more exciting than cricket

I know you wouldn't believe it
I know you wouldn't believe it
I know you wouldn't believe it
We're gonna win the cup

We're gonna win the cup
We're gonna win the cup

I know you wouldn't belie ieve ieve it

We're gonna win the cup.

How more poetic then that could you get.

Played a lot of cricket in my day as well. Best effort 6 wickets for 5 runs

Still do not like the game unless I'm playing of course and then only if I'm captain.

" we're going to win the cup "

many years ago Bob an ancient warrior said to his opponent who was sure of winning " don't celebrate as one who takes his armour off, when you are putting your armour on "
Very poetic don't you think ? ;)

A male calendar sounds like a GREAT idea! I can just see certain members (!) hiding behind volumes of Paterson and Lawson, etc What an innovative way to take bush poetry to the world! It's sure to be a winner. Just make sure you run it past the committee for approval and issues of copyright, distribution etc.

You'd be in that wouldn't you Peely? ;)

Now Heather you can not make such a bland statement and then leave it at that.

Why would a man play Rugby League?
I haven't the slightest clue.
None of the tossers have any necks.
They're such an unsightly crew.

They run and stop, and run and stop.
That's all they do all day.
It would have to be the most tedious
Game you could ever play,

And this is evidenced, of course,
By numbers of spectators.
We get more at suburban games
For third and second raters!

Women love the AFL.
They're half the crowd, or more.
They cannot stand that Rugby League.
It's such a flamin' bore!

At least that Rugby Union
Has some variety.
They run and kick, and kick and run.
Yes, it'll do for me!

Kicking takes no skill, you say?
Try this for a test.
Spot a bloke a forty metres.
Land it on his chest.

Look at Buddy Franklin,
Out at seventy degrees:
Full pace, at fifty metres,
And he splits the posts with ease!

The Swans and Lions both won cups.
They blazed a brand new track,
Unlike the Melbourne Storm, of course,
Who had to hand theirs back!

So, don't exalt that Rugby League!
I've never heard such guff.
Down south we're faster...stronger...
And we're made of sterner stuff!
