The 3rd installment of poems for my kids whose birthdays are spread evenly across the four seasons.
Winter
Alister, 12th June 1999
Now the days grow shorter and the light begins to soften
As both our thoughts and actions are turned inward more often
While our bodies grow inactive, and only noses run
You shine your light upon me, for the first time, Winter son.
So feeble in the morning, yet each hour growing stronger
So brightly in the patches where the clouds conceal no longer
So clearly when the whipping wind whistles through the trees
And slowly in the afternoon with a frost upon the breeze
For what else makes you feel your skin or quantify desire?
What could calm your fear to appreciate the fire?
What could re-ignite you when the darkest night was done?
You shine your light upon me, for the first time, Winter son.
It's when the shadows lengthen and the darkest days begin
That the fondest memories strengthen as the cold night settles in
It is then we look for answers, it is then we question ‘why?’
With no light to warm or guide us from a blue unblemished sky
Then, surely in the morning when the ground is crystal white
As the glowing pink of dawning slinks from indistinct, to bright
Then the sweetest straight horizons dance with chances yet begun
You shine your light upon, for the first time, Winter son.
